A second small group is in the government's sights. The procedure for the dissolution of the Lille-based ultra-right association La Citadelle has been initiated, AFP learned on Friday from a source close to the case. On November 28, Gérald Darmanin announced that he was going to "propose the end of a small group called the Martel Division and two others directly linked to the extreme right-wing mobilizations."
The first, a small group of about 30 people, was disbanded last week. La Citadelle, a bar with a distinctive effect in Lille, is the second. "I will not let any militia lay down the law in place of the public prosecutors and the police," Darmanin said at the end of November, adding that the death of young Thomas, who was killed after a ball in the town of Crépol (Drôme) a little over a week ago, should "not allow anyone else to stand up in the name of the state to do justice."
"There is a mobilization in the ultra-right that wants to tip us into civil war," he feared, assuring that he had been "extremely firm with the police and gendarmes so that they can arrest" the activists participating in the violent actions carried out in recent days in reaction to Thomas' death.
