Playwright and director Edna Mazia, who wrote the successful play "Playing in the Backyard," has passed away at the age of 74 from cancer, it was announced on Sunday. She was considered one of the most prominent Israeli playwrights in recent decades, and was also the creative partner of playwright Anat Gov and directed all her plays, including "Happy Endings". Her funeral will take place on Wednesday at 11:30 in the Moshav Nahalal cemetery.

Mazia also wrote film scripts, and co-wrote Amos Gutman's films "Infected", "Bar 51" and "King Himo of Jerusalem". Her breakthrough came with the successful play "Playing in the Backyard", written following the rape affair at Shomra and staged at the Haifa Theater and later in Cameri and Beit Lisin.

Among her other plays are: "Vienna by the Sea", "My Family Story", "The Rebels", "There Was or Wasn't", "The Aristocrats", "Pregnancy", "Herod", "Bad Children", "Family Affair", "The New Criminals", and "The Back Room", "Couple". Her latest play, "Stampagno", is currently being rehearsed at the Beit Lisin Theater. She also wrote books for children and adults.

Tzipi Pines, director of the Baruch Ivcher Beit Lisin Theater, eulogized her. "My heart was broken, Edna was a friend and a loyal partner in a long way in the world of theater. She was a playwright and director with a strong, clear and uncompromising female voice, who chose with courage and a keen eye to deal with sensitive issues and put them on the agenda through the stage," Pines said. "Edna was a witty, opinionated and humorous woman, whose mouth and heart were always equal, she will be greatly missed by me and the theater."
