A 17-year-old boy was shot dead early Sunday evening in the northeast of the main island of Mayotte, police sources said. He is said to have lost his life during clashes between gangs in the Kawéni and Majikavo neighbourhoods north of Mamoudzou, the capital of the archipelago.
Two other people were wounded by the same weapon, the same source said, confirming information from Mayotte la 1ère.

The incident comes two days after Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne promised more resources to counter insecurity in France's poorest department, which has been rocked by clashes between groups of young people from rival villages.
Elected officials call for state action
Mayotte MP Estelle Youssouffa (Liot) deplored an "escalation" in the violence experienced by the population of the small archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

"Drastic measures to restore security and eradicate the criminal gangs that are rampant around the slums are to be taken with an arm that does not tremble," reacted on the same social network the territory's other deputy, Mansour Kamardine (LR).
