All of them have left their mark on the history of medicine, but very few are present in our memory. "The history of medicine is modelled on history with a capital H. Women face the same obstacles in medicine as those imposed by society," writes Professor Jean-Noël Fabiani-Salmon, former head of cardiovascular surgery at the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital who is now head of the history of medicine at the University of Paris Cité faculty. Forests were cut down to make the hagiography of the great men of medicine. Jean-Noël Fabiani-Salmon has set out, in some twenty portraits, to do a little justice to all those who, despite the obstacles, have managed to circumvent the ban imposed on them to heal, in order to advance their art.
