Assets worth €7.5 million have been seized by the financiers of the first metropolitan operational unit of Naples in the provinces of Naples, Rome, Catania and Syracuse as part of an investigation involving a Maltese corporation and its director, believed to be at the centre of a fraud in the marketing of fuels.
The amount seized corresponds to the evasion of income tax and VAT due by the company which was fictitiously resident abroad.
So far, the yellow flames have put the seals on a property located in Syracuse (with an estimated value of 70 thousand euros), three luxury cars (a Volkswagen and two Porsches), shareholdings worth 51 thousand euros and financial assets for 60 thousand euros, for a total value of about 260 thousand euros. According to the investigations, the Maltese company, with decision-making centres in Naples and Catania, imported fuel by sea from Spain, which was stored, under tax suspension, in a tax warehouse in the port of Naples.
The diesel was then loaded onto tankers and transported to commercial warehouses and resold by them to fuel distributors located in the Neapolitan hinterland, which sold it evading excise duties and VAT, thus charging a price significantly lower than market values.
As part of the searches and seizures in the regions of Campania, Lazio, Lombardy, Sicily and Emilia Romagna, 25 individuals and 23 legal entities were reported for smuggling petroleum products and tax crimes, such as evasion of payment of excise duty, issuing and using invoices for non-existent transactions and omitted tax declarations.
