The 20th BMW Art Car will be presented on May 21st at the Center Pompidou in Paris, France.
This is the M Hybrid V8, designed by the artist Julie Mehretu, which will race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15 and 16 June.
The car will have the starting number 20, the crew that will have the task of driving it in the race is made up of Sheldon van der Linde, Robin Frijns, and René Rast, and it will be the first Art Car since the 2017 season.
The design conceived by Julie Mehretu uses the vocabulary of colors and shapes of an already existing large-format painting from a series of more recent works: the motif of the resulting image is a high-resolution photograph on the contours of the vehicle created with a 3D mapping technique.
In accordance with FIA regulations, the 3D version of the artwork can only be applied to the BMW M Hybrid V8 with film.
"It was only after participating in the 24 Hours of Daytona last year that the idea of how to approach the BMW Art Car really crystallized - said Julie Mehretu - I was thinking about Frank Stella's grid and how this could be an homage to the former BMW Art Car artists. And I kept thinking about this painting in my studio that I had just finished and the model of the Art Car that was in my studio and I thought maybe we could try to make the car move through this painting ".
