Highlights: The investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy that occurred on Sunday in the Sancy massif (Puy-de-Dôme) has only just begun. The last two people fell behind the rest of the group and preferred to take another, easier route. “When they joined the others, they realized that the passage had split and saw ice axes on the surface of the snow,” says the deputy prosecutor of Clermont-Ferrand. In the coming days, investigators will analyze all of the participants' cell phones, interview possible survivors and try to reconstruct the tragic scenario.

Can the very poor weather conditions on the Sancy massif on the day of the accident explain, in themselves, the dramatic human toll of this mountain outing?

An investigation was launched by the Clermont-Ferrand public prosecutor's office on Sunday in order to better understand the circumstances of the tragedy that occurred in the Val d'Enfer, in an off-piste passage at the Mont-Dore station (Puy-de-Dôme) .

“Yesterday was the time for rescue, today the time for investigation.

New findings were made on the ground this morning, summarized this Monday Captain Thomas Brobeck, commander of the Mont-Dore High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) in charge of the investigations.

It could last several days, or even several weeks.

“They saw ice axes on the surface of the snow”

Thanks to the first hearings of witnesses, we know a little more about the course of the day which ended in the death of four mountaineers.

“There were four teams,” summarizes Bruno Fauh, the deputy prosecutor of Clermont-Ferrand.

The first was made up of the three Cantaliens of the group, the guide David Vigouroux and the two cousins, one of whom lost his life.

Following behind were the six other mountaineers, all members of the Vichy French Alpine Club, divided into three teams of two.

But as we progressed, the last two people fell behind the rest of the group and preferred to take another, easier route.

“When they joined the others, they realized that the passage had split and saw ice axes on the surface of the snow.

That’s when they realized that something had happened and they immediately raised the alarm,” continues the public prosecutor.

In the coming days, investigators will analyze all of the participants' cell phones, interview possible survivors and try to reconstruct the tragic scenario.

“The bodies were returned to the families on Sunday so that they could begin their work of mourning,” sympathizes the deputy prosecutor, who did not request an autopsy of the victims.
