The Bredeney office park is a faceless building complex in the south of Essen. This is where the medical service of the Central Association of Health Insurance Funds (MDS) is based. The organization with the awkward name has an important task in the German health system. It coordinates the work of the medical services of the health insurance in the countries and is intended to ensure that millions of insured persons are medically assessed according to uniform rules.

So far the MDS in Essen went about its work noiselessly, but the quiet is now over. At the request of Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), the service will be rebuilt and placed under the supervision of the ministry. In the course of the reform, the management of the MDS is preparing a move to Berlin. However, she does not want to reside in the capital outside the center, but also had premium locations inspected.

SPIEGEL has confidential documents that reveal that the MDS has targeted some expensive objects. This also includes Quartier 206, a pompous ensemble on Friedrichstrasse. Instead of the previous 10 euros per square meter as in Essen, the basic rent there would cost almost five times as much - 47.60 euros. The MDS, jointly responsible for strict reports on people in need of care, seems to be generous in its own right.
