Coronavirus: "Are public toilets usable?"

2020-05-05T14:06:18.875Z

Sanisettes in major cities had closed, but some reopened for hygiene reasons.

Every day, Le Parisien is mobilized to answer your questions around the coronavirus. Today we are interested in the questioning of Sébastien, who asks us if we can use the sanisettes in town.

Since the entry into force of containment on March 17, the majority of public toilets installed in large cities and managed by private operators have been closed. This is the case in Paris, Marseille and Lyon, for example.

Since April, some of them have been accessible again. In the capital, 140 of the 435 sanisettes have reopened since mid-April. From May 11 and during progressive deconfinement, hydroalcoholic gel dispensers could also be installed there.

Access to water and hygiene products:
• 10 shower baths, 600 “Eau de Paris” fountains and 140 sanisettes have been opened or re-opened.

On the other hand, the 300 toilets and urinals located in public gardens are still out of use, the parks being closed during confinement. They should even remain so from May 11, since Paris is likely to be a department classified in red.

"The emergency is there, before us"

In Lyon, on April 7, the prefect ordered the JCDecaux company to reopen 11 public toilets out of the 46 that it operates in the city so that the homeless can take advantage of them. For the same reason, 17 sanisettes gradually reopen from April 30 in Toulouse.

11 public toilets were also made available on April 11 in Marseille, for hygiene reasons. "The emergency is there before us, with its faces of extreme insecurity," said the president of the department of Bouches-du-Rhône and candidate for mayor of the city, Martine Vassal, in La Provence.
