Coronavirus: Nielsen, large-scale retail sales + 4.2% in the first phase

From the beginning of the health emergency to the end of the lockdown, in the period between Monday 17 February and Sunday 3 May, the sales of the large-scale retail trade recorded growth of + 4.2% on an equal number of stores. (HANDLE)


MILAN - From the beginning of the health emergency to the end of the lockdown, in the period between Monday 17 February and Sunday 3 May, the sales of the large-scale retail trade recorded growth of + 4.2% on an equal number of stores.

According to Nielsen, the North East recorded the highest increases on a trend basis (+ 7.4%), followed by the South (+ 5.2%), the North West (+ 3.5%) and Central Italy (+1.8 %).

The so-called Liberi Servizi (+ 26.9%), i.e. the small-sized markets, have driven the growth in sales in the large-scale distribution, followed by supermarkets (+ 12.9%) and discount stores (+ 7.9%). On the other hand, sales were down for Drug Specialists (-10.6%) and for Hypermarkets (-9.8%). In the Cash & Carry format, there was a constant drop in sales, resulting in a negative trend of 39.8%, mainly impacted by the closure of public premises and catering and catering establishments.

Triple-digit growth for the eCommerce channel: the trend of sales of consumer products online from 17 February to 3 May was + 144.6%, with a peak growth in the fourth week of April equal to +304, The digitization of some purchasing processes due to mobility restrictions has doubled the growth of eCommerce weight on the total value of Italian consumer goods.
