(ANSA) - LAKE CHARLES, AUGUST 29 - The death toll from the passage of Hurricane Laura on the Louisiana and Texas has risen to at least 14. This was reported by the local health authorities.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has confirmed that at least 10 people have lost their lives in his state, including five due to carbon monoxide produced by portable generators used inside buildings due to a lack of electricity. Another 4 died from falling trees, while a man drowned in the sinking of his boat caused by the storm. Almost 500,000 people have been without electricity since yesterday. In Texas too, 3 of the 4 victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Before arriving in the United States and turning into a rainstorm last Thursday, Hurricane Laura caused 31 deaths in Haiti and 4 in the Dominican Republic last Sunday.
