Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister reacted to the death of a one-year-old girl who had died in an accident with an escort vehicle belonging to the politician.
Winfried Kretschmann canceled all appearances for Monday.
"For reasons of piety we see ourselves unable to make appointments," said a government spokesman.
Kretschmann's limousine, the first vehicle in a column, went off the lane on August 31, probably due to aquaplaning on Autobahn 81.
According to the police, the vehicle first hit a guardrail and then came to a halt in the hard shoulder.
An escort vehicle and a police car then stopped behind Kretschmann.
The head of government was unharmed.
Another vehicle then skid a little later due to aquaplaning and crashed into the accompanying vehicle.
The one-year-old child sat in the back seat of this vehicle.
The 33-year-old driver of this car was also seriously injured.
The 29-year-old passenger was slightly injured.
"I am full of sadness"
It was announced on Sunday that the child did not survive.
The Prime Minister announced on the same day: "I am full of sadness."
The accident also preoccupies the judiciary.
The Heilbronn public prosecutor's office has started investigations into the infant's life-threatening injuries.
There is a suspicion of negligent bodily harm against a 33-year-old who is said to have caused the accident, a spokesman for the authorities said.
Kretschmann wanted to visit Baden-Württemberg's first nature park, the Schönbuch, with Forest Minister Peter Hauk (CDU) on Monday afternoon.
The appointment is now expected to be made up for the end of the week, it said from the State Ministry.
The participation of Kretschmann at the car summit on Tuesday evening with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is planned.
