Prince Charles sees global warming as a far greater danger than the current corona pandemic.
Although this is widely denied, the climate crisis has been worsening "for too many years," said the British heir to the throne in a message to be played at the opening of Climate Week on Monday in New York.
Climate change is currently "rapidly developing into a major catastrophe that will overshadow the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic," added the 71-year-old.
"Without swift and immediate trade at an unprecedented rate and scale, we will miss the period of opportunity" to create a brighter future.
Prince Charles has been an environmental advocate for many years.
However, other members of the British royal family received criticism for climate-damaging behavior such as flights in private jets.
On Monday the UN celebrates its founding 75 years ago, on Tuesday the debate between the heads of state and government before the UN General Assembly begins.
At the same time, Climate Week aims to promote a decisive fight against global warming.
