(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 19 - Begin prevention well before menopause, starting from the period of construction of the skeletal bone mass, then from the adolescent phase, passing through fertile life up to premenopause and throughout the post-menopausal period.

These are the new indications to prevent osteoporosis, a systemic disease of the skeletal system that involves a reduction in bone strength and the consequent increase in the risk of fracture.

If you manage to prevent bone loss in the pre-menopausal and premenopausal periods, you will have a greater reserve that will help fight osteoporosis.

"It is important to consider - says Stefano Lello of the Department of Health Protection for Women and Children, Fondazione PoliclinicoGemelli-IRCCS - the periods of amenorrhea from 3 months upwards with a reduction in the levels of estrogen hormones or the periods of anorexia nervosa, especially in the period of adolescence and up to the age of 25-30 years, period in which the construction of the skeletal mass is completed ".

Vitamin D intake is also fundamental. "It is an essential element - continues Lello - in all phases of life. It promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine. It is recommended to take it with the diet and in case of insufficient daily intake , with supplementation ".

After the age of 50, in the world, one in three women and one in five men are at risk of a fracture due to osteoporosis.

On average, one occurs every 3 seconds.

In 2017, the annual expenditure in Italy for fractures caused by osteoporosis was approximately € 10 billion and by 2030 an expenditure of more than 12 billion is estimated.

Today, however, there is an additional tool for diagnosing the disease.

Computed Bone Mineralometry (MOC), the examination that indicates the density of the bone, is accompanied by another data that is obtained during the execution of the MOC: the Trabecular Score (TBS), a parameter that provides information on the internal structure of the vertebrae and helps to evaluate more completely the resistance of the skeleton.

"However, what must be carefully evaluated - concludes Lello - is the risk of fracture, and this can be calculated by applying algorithms, that is models that integrate the data of the MOC with various clinical risk factors, such as age, weight, height, sex, familiarity in parents with fracture of the femur, use of smoking and / or alcohol, use of cortisone therapies ".
