Viola threat in the championship for Inter, queen of the Super Cup
Having brought the Italian Super Cup won in Saudi Arabia to the table, Inter returns to focus on the championship.
The head-to-head with Juventus for the Nerazzurri starts again from the treacherous away match against Fiorentina: treacherous not only because Inter often stumbled at the Franchi, but also because against the Viola the suspended Barella and Calhanoglu will be missing, fundamental players among the starters Simone Inzaghi.
The alternatives are already ready, with Frattesi and Asllani ready to start from 1st tomorrow.
But two significant absences remain, also because Calhanoglu has always been a starter in the league this season (with an important role in particular in penalties, infallible from the penalty spot thanks to seven goals out of seven) while Barella only started from the bench in the Empoli match, leaving own space for Frattesi but taking over during the match in progress.
We will also have to evaluate the post-Supercup waste, considering the energy expenditure for the two close matches against Lazio and Napoli.
In midfield the only big player available will therefore be Mkhitaryan, who comes from a period as a driving force in midfield: so much so that, after the assists against Verona and Monza, he aims to provide the third assist in consecutive matches for the second time in his career (the first with Manchester United in 2017).
However, Inter wants to continue racing, also to get to the direct clash with Juventus next week as best as possible.
The start of 2024 smiles on the Nerazzurri, who achieved four victories (two in the league and two in the Super Cup) in the first four matches of the calendar year for the first time since 2017. Also thanks to a Lautaro Martinez in great form, who after goal number 123 in a Nerazzurri shirt scored against Napoli now aims for number 124, which would mean reaching Mauro Icardi in the ranking of scorers in Inter history.
And next to him will be Thuram, already with eight goals in Serie A, targeting the double figure which in his debut year with the Nerazzurri and in Italy was achieved only by Lukaku, Eto'o and Djorkaeff.
As for the rest of the formation, the midfield may not be the only revolutionized department: in defense Bastoni is playing with Acerbi as a starter alongside Pavard and De Vrij, but among Inzaghi's doubts there are also those on the flanks, in particular with Carlos Augusto threatening Dimarco, while Darmian seems ahead of Dumfries on the right.
Sensi will also be with the group, probably at his last match with Inter: the former Sassuolo player will in fact fly to England on Monday to undergo a medical with Leicester.
