Edit: Saul AdamMexico's cartel leader was eliminated during a fire exchange with security forces. Maria Guadeloupe Lopes Escival, nicknamed "La Katrina," was 21. She was killed during an attack on security forces in La Buquenda town in central Michoacan. According to state officials, six gunmen were captured during the attack, which opened fire on soldiers and police. At the same location, 13 police officers were killed in October in an ambush that Katrina took part in.
The incident happened on Friday and authorities did not confirm the identity of the slain, but this was revealed in pictures and videos posted online. Among other things, a tattoo found on her thigh reads "Katrina". According to the videos, she was shot in the neck and apparently died of blood loss.

In the Army documentation, she was seen sitting on the ground and having trouble breathing. "Relax baby, the helicopter is on your way," one of the soldiers told her. "Relax dear, you're going to be fine. Try to hold on." In the video, she was seen evacuated on Alcona and taken into a helicopter.
Women have previously held senior positions in the drug cartels in Mexico, as money launderers, but few have targeted assassination squads like her. She is believed to have joined the "New Generation Jalisco" cartel in 2017 when she moved to live with a member of the organization.
