Nazi-clad dancers, youth in prison uniforms in the extermination camps and a stage with crematoriums: This is how the Holocaust was presented in a march at Campo De Cryptana • Israeli Embassy in Spain: "Abominable Exhibition"
After criticizing the festival in the city of Alast in Belgium, whose antisemitic signs have long been known, it was the traditional carnival held yesterday (Monday) across Spain that "surprised". The most serious and serious event at the carnival took place in Campo De Cryptana and included the Holocaust play.
The local band responsible for the play was dressed in dancers in Nazi attire, with boys and girls dressed in extermination camp inmates. And that's not all: a stage was built with crematoria and chimneys alongside a march accompanied by music.
The Israeli embassy in Madrid expressed disgust at the social networks in the face of the incident. "We condemn the abominable and ugly exhibition presented at the Campo De Cryptana Carnival. The play is a legalization of the Holocaust and mocks the six million Jews who were exterminated in the Holocaust.
In addition, the embassy spoke with Mayor Santiago Lazaro, who expressed his apology. According to him, the subject was presented to him in advance by the artistic band "as homage to the Holocaust and not as an attempt to insult or ridicule". At the same time, the band's director, Jorge Gonzalez, contacted the embassy and also apologized.
It should be noted that the band was hired by other cities in the area to present the play in question to be more carnivals to be held in the coming days, but in light of the embassy protest it was promised that the play would not be played again.
Along with the embassy, the Jewish Federation and some local media have already addressed and fully condemned the issue. "The Jewish Federation takes this very seriously," it said.
In the background, in the Jewish community, Spain's discouragement over the Holocaust fears. A senior Jewish community official told Israel Today: "The play is another bad omen that indicates the low level of discourse associated with the Holocaust. It is clear to all that the Spanish civil war atrocities were not similarly addressed, for example."
