Mexico proposed to the United States to postpone the restriction of the "non-essential" land passage on their common border, the Ministry of Foreign Relations reported.

The measure was taken after reviewing the development of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Foreign Ministry explained that the provisions would be maintained in the same way as they have been applied since last March 21.

Both countries will coordinate sanitary measures in the border region that will be in effect until 11:59 p.m. on October 21, 2020, says the official Mexican communication.

The plan caused the United States to restrict travel across its northern and southern borders due to the coronavirus pandemic.

President Donald Trump announced in March that the United States and Canada agreed to suspend non-essential travel between countries due to the pandemic.

The State Department also warned American citizens not to travel abroad due to the pandemic, issuing the highest possible level of travel warning.

The Level 4 advisory advises not to travel and "avoid all international travel due to the global impact of covid-19."
