VW is currently offering its third-class SUV as a new car in its third edition. But how does the Touareg perform as a used vehicle?

Berlin (dpa / tmn) - The Touareg is one of the SUV pioneers and has been the flagship model of the manufacturer at VW since the end of production of the luxury sedan Phaethon. His performance in the main inspection (HU) does not quite match this.

Model history: In 2002 the model first came to the dealers, the second edition considered here followed in 2010. With the model update from 2014, more assistance and infotainment systems came and the engines became more economical, the V6 diesel learned to sail - i.e. rolling at idle to save fuel. The third generation has been on the road since 2018.

Body variants: The VW Touareg is a full-blown SUV, even if the second edition is a bit slimmer than its predecessor.

Dimensions: 2nd generation: 4.80 mx 1.94 mx 1.71 m (LxWxH), trunk volume: 580 l to 1642 l (hybrid version: 493 l to 1555 l)

Strengths: Let your occupants glide over the highway thanks to the gentle suspension, but also leave a good impression on the terrain thanks to the additional Terrain Tech equipment with gear reduction and differential locks. At the HU, it proves to be less susceptible to the chassis: springs, dampers, wheel suspensions and tie rods rarely receive criticism. The parking brake, brake hoses and lines have proven to be resistant, according to the "Auto Bild Tüv Report 2020".

Weaknesses: The biggest shortcoming is the oil loss, which according to the report increases from the second HU in the complaints to double the average value. Defects in the headlights are then registered above average, and the function of the foot brake is often criticized even at the first HU. The HU is "not a self-advocate," writes the TÜV report. The defect rates of the five- to seven-year-olds are lower than for the younger copies.

Breakdown behavior: With reference to its breakdown statistics, the ADAC writes: "The Touareg performs well." The club does not mention any statistically particularly prominent flaws.

Engines: 2nd generation: petrol engine (six-cylinder with all-wheel drive): 206 kW / 280 hp; Diesel (six- and eight-cylinder with all-wheel drive): 150 kW / 204 hp to 250 kW / 340 hp; Hybrid (six-cylinder petrol engine plus electric motor): 279 kW / 380 hp (system output).

Market prices (according to "DAT Markttspiegel" by Deutsche Automobil Treuhand, each with statistically expected kilometers):

- Touareg 4.2 V8 TDI (2014); 250 kW / 340 hp (eight-cylinder); 142,000 kilometers; 24 250 euros.

- Touareg 3.6 V6 FSI BMT (2013); 206 kW / 280 hp (six-cylinder); 136,000 kilometers; 16,900 euros.

- Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI BMT Terrain Tech (2017); 193 kW / 262 hp (six-cylinder); 70,000 kilometers; 27,550 euros.
