The H mark has existed in Germany since 1997. But only special cars can adorn themselves with this addition. We explain what is behind the H mark.
In Germany there are around 477,000 classic cars with a so-called H-license plate and thus benefit from numerous advantages such as tax breaks and environmental exemptions. We explain which cars get an H license plate and what it means.
H mark: when is an old car a classic car?
Oldtimers are cars, motorcycles, buses or trucks, "which were first put into circulation at least 30 years ago , largely correspond to the original condition, are in good condition and are used to maintain the automotive engineering heritage [...]". So it is in paragraph 2 No. 20 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV).
Age is therefore only a prerequisite for issuing an H license plate. The other is the original condition . Tuned cars can therefore not apply for a vintage license plate, even if they are at least 30 years old.
H mark: What does original condition mean?
If a car is at least 30 years old, only a small step to the H license plate is made. Next, a classic car report must be prepared by a recognized expert .
To do this, you can contact Tüv, Dekra or another testing organization, for example. Since 2007, every certified test engineer has been able to prepare this report. The FZV does not provide precise regulations as to which parts must be original . Therefore, it may depend on the expert whether you get an H license plate for your classic car or not.

But there are some basic rules. The vehicle must correspond to the original in all main assemblies. Modifications may only be made if they were typical of the time . The car must also be well maintained. Due to major defects or signs of wear, the H-mark can be denied.
The H mark offers these advantages
The effort for an H license plate can be worthwhile. Because they offer numerous advantages for vehicle owners. This includes tax benefits, cheaper car insurance and lower environmental requirements.
Vintage car with H-plates are allowed to drive, for example, without a catalyst in environmental zones. An environmental badge is also not necessary.
H-plates can have a positive effect, especially with regard to vehicle tax. A flat fee of € 191.73 is due for cars - regardless of displacement and consumption. For historical motorcycles, owners only have to pay 46.02 euros. In addition, many insurance companies offer cheaper tariffs for classic cars because they assume that these vehicles will be handled with more care.
