The most up-to-date map of cat DNA can help understand many human diseases, in addition to those of felines.
It was published in PLOS Genetics by the University of Missouri and Texas A&M University, both in the United States.
The authors of the research mapped the genetic heritage of an Abyssinian cat, characterized by a cinnamon-red fur, managing to identify new DNA variants linked to various feline diseases. They then compared the Abyssinian cat DNA sequences with 54 genetic maps stored in the feline DNA archive, a kind of cat DNA genome project. In this way it was possible to identify genetic variants hitherto unknown, some of which are involved in human diseases, including some forms of dwarfism.
