Thanks to the right-before-left rule, it is actually clear who has the right of way at intersections without signs or traffic lights. But what if four cars arrive at the same time?

If you want to get your driving license, you should start saving in good time: a driving license now costs 3,000 to 4,000 euros. And the questions in the theory test also seem to be causing problems for more and more learner drivers - recently, attempts at cheating in the test have skyrocketed. But even after passing the exam, some questions or the answers to them are forgotten again. What was it like again with the four cars at the same intersection?

Four cars at an equal intersection: one has to give up its right of way

It doesn't happen too often, but it's still an interesting question: If four cars approach an intersection without traffic lights or signs at the same time and everyone wants to go straight - who has the right of way? Actually, the right-before-left rule now applies. Only: With four cars, this regulation doesn't help. The solution is: communication. One of the four drivers has to give up his right of way.

Intersection with four cars: communication by hand signal

One of the four drivers must use a hand signal to signal to his neighbor on the left that he can drive off. Theoretically, the driver on the right would have the right of way anyway. In our example, the driver of the white car could give the driver of the yellow car a corresponding signal. As soon as the yellow car has crossed the intersection, the situation is resolved and the “regular” right-before-left rule applies again.

Anyone who waives their right of way is allowed to drive last

The blue car and then the red car can drive off one after the other. The driver of the white car - who gave up his right of way - is the last person allowed to cross the intersection.
