(CNN) - Shortly after school ended on Monday, a deadly fight broke out in a mall near Oceanside High School in Nassau County, New York. A group of teenagers watched as Khaseen Morris, a 16-year-old student, was assaulted and stabbed in the chest. Some took out their phones and documented the fight on social media, but no one intervened to help him.

Morris died of his injuries after being taken to the hospital, according to Detective Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick of the Nassau County Police Department.

In a statement issued Wednesday, police announced that Tyler Flach, 18, was charged with second-degree murder. It is scheduled to be processed on Thursday. Police did not confirm if Flach has a lawyer.

At a press conference on Tuesday, before arrests were made, Fitzpatrick said it was a "scheduled" fight over a "girl and the perception of who she might be dating or who she could be spending time with right now."

"That dispute warmed up here, where a group of six to seven men accused the victim and a couple of his friends, and during that close combat, he stabbed him," said Fitzpatrick, standing in front of the mall where it took place. the fight. .

He estimated that there were between 50 and 70 children there at that time and said that several of them had submitted information.

Fitzpatrick said he didn't know what to do with the amount of spectators who didn't help Morris. “The children stood there and did not help Khaseen. They preferred to record this event. They recorded his death instead of helping him, ”he said.

In an interview with WPIX, a CNN affiliate, Khaseen's sister, Keyanna, said the attackers "took my brother and my family from me." CNN has contacted members of the Morris family for comments.

The superintendent of the Oceanside School District, Phyllis Harrington, said in a video posted Thursday that the district is doing “everything necessary” to protect students and staff.

He also asked parents to talk with their children about the use of social networks, warning users not to "participate in spreading rumors." CNN has contacted the school district for comments.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement that more police officers would be assigned to patrol Oceanside High School and neighboring schools. "I want to beg all our residents, not just our young people: if you see someone in serious danger, use your phone to get help, not to get likes," he said.
