Draghi: Indonesia's president rules out Putin's G20 trip

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the G20 summit in Bali in November.

According to Italy's Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the Indonesian President has made it clear that this is out of the question.

Elmau - According to Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be traveling to Indonesia in person for the G20 summit in the fall.

The Indonesian President Joko Widodo, as the host of the G20 meeting, said that clearly, Draghi reported on Tuesday after the G7 summit in Bavaria, which Widodo attended as a guest at times.

“Widodo rules this out and was categorical.

He (Putin) will not come.”

It is unclear whether the Kremlin chief wants to take part in the G20 summit via video link.

"We'll see what will happen," Draghi said.

According to the Russian news agency Interfax, Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said: "Well, that's definitely not Draghi.

The invitation came and we responded positively.”

Putin wants to attend G20 summit

On Monday, Ushakov said that Putin wanted to take part in the summit on the Indonesian island of Bali in mid-November - but left it open in what format.

Indonesian President Widodo confirmed Putin's participation at the end of April.

It was therefore recently unclear how the western countries would react to this.

Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the possibility that Putin could meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G20 summit, against whose country he has been at war for more than four months: "It will not interest us much whether he (Zelenskyy) is there somewhere walking around on the edge of the summit in Bali or not,” Lavrov said.

Zelenskyj was also invited by the Indonesian government, although Ukraine is not a member.
