Washington (AP) - On the US labor market, the recovery from the severe Corona slump has surprisingly stalled.
Last week, the number of initial jobless claims, a short-term indicator for the job market, rose again for the first time since April.
In a weekly comparison, the number rose by 37,000 to 412,000, as the US Department of Labor announced in Washington.
Analysts were surprised by the development.
They had expected a further decline in aid requests to an average of 360,000.
The week before, with 375,000 applications, the lowest level since the beginning of the Corona crisis had been reached.
The number of initial applications has been falling since the beginning of the year.
The situation on the labor market in the world's largest economy is improving thanks to a robust upswing due to huge government aid and advances in corona vaccinations.
However, the requests for assistance have not yet reached the level that prevailed before the Corona crisis.
In the months leading up to the pandemic, a good 200,000 new applications were made each week.
