Italy has activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to request, in particular, high-capacity pumping equipment. Brussels "mobilised bids from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia to help the Italian authorities cope with heavy flooding" in Emilia-Romagna.

The EU's Copernicus service also provided emergency satellite mapping of the affected areas, following a request from Italy's civil protection on 16 May. The European Emergency Response Coordination Centre has been in constant contact with Italian authorities.
