The EU Commission in Brussels is planning a ban on coffee capsules. Capsules that are not compostable will soon be banned and may no longer be put into circulation.
The basis for the possible imminent ban is to be a new EU law on packaging and packaging waste. If the ban comes as planned, capsule manufacturers such as Nespresso would have to put their business in the European Union on a completely new footing. Nestlé has even responded to objections from environmentalists and plans to start producing paper coffee capsules by 2023.
