In 2023, $575 billion in new green bonds have been issued, according to Bloomberg. These are loans issued on the bond market, accompanied by a commitment from the issuer to use the money raised to finance projects with an environmental impact.

The first green bonds appeared in November 2008, under the leadership of the World Bank. Under the aegis of the International Capital Markets Association, guidelines (the Green Bond Principles) were issued. The guidelines require issuers of green bonds to communicate environmental objectives to the market.
