The United States did not provide its biennial nuclear data update on March 30 after Russia failed to provide its own. The START treaty requires Moscow and Washington to exchange databases in March and September each year.

At the end of January, Russian President Vladimir Putin enacted the law to suspend New Start, the last bilateral treaty with the United States on the limitation of nuclear weapons. The United States remains ready to work constructively with Russia to resume the implementation of New Start. The U.S. State Department has "notified Russia of countermeasures in advance and expressed the desire and readiness" to remove them.
