The light plane in which the children were flying crashed on May 1. Three adults on the flight, including the children's mother, were killed.

The children, ages 13, 9 and 4, and the 11-month-old baby, survived in the jungle using makeshift shelters and eating fruit. They were located after a search operation with the help of sniffer dogs and helicopters. The plane was carrying seven people and crashed in Kakata Province, south of Colombia, following an engine failure.
