Four Colombian children have been found alive in the south of the country, more than two weeks after the plane they were flying crashed into the jungle, President Gustavo Petro said on Wednesday. The children were rescued by an army firefighter and the Civil Aviation Authority from deep in the jungle in Kakata Province. The plane that crashed on May 1 this month, following an engine failure, a Cessna 206, was carrying seven people.

"After a grueling search by the military, we found four children alive, who were missing since the crash," the president said on Twitter. The three adults on board, including the pilot, died in the crash, and their bodies were found inside the plane. The surviving children are siblings, ages 13, 9, and 4, as well as an 11-month-old baby. One of those killed was the mother of the four children.

According to preliminary information from the Aviation Authority, which coordinated the rescue efforts, the children were rescued from the plane and went out into the rainforest to seek help. Using sniffer dogs, rescuers initially found leftover fruits that the children had eaten to survive, as well as makeshift shelters they had set up from jungle plant leaves and branches. Colombian army planes and helicopters also participated in the search.
