European Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said there was "appreciation" for Italy within the EU executive. He especially praised the prudence in the handling of the Superbonus scheme to incentivize energy-efficient building renovations.

He also said it was up to national governments to decide what to put in their DEF economic blueprints, after Rome this week approved a document that was low on detail about its plans. "The priority for us is what will happen in the summer and autumn with the medium-term plans," he said. The European Commission is the European Union's executive branch. It has the power to impose sanctions on countries that do not comply with EU rules and regulations, and can seek compensation for losses caused by breaches of the rules. The Commission can also impose fines on countries who do not abide by the rules, or seek compensation from the European Court of Justice for breaches of EU rules.
