The federal and state governments are postponing their fundamental decision on permanently higher federal funds for refugee costs. This emerges from a decision that the prime ministers agreed with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Wednesday evening.

The decision in principle is to be made at the next regular meeting in November. The prime ministers will discuss the issue at a summit in Berlin on Thursday. The meeting will be the first of its kind in Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It will also be the second such meeting in Germany, after the first one in 2000.
