Plaine carnival has been taking place for around twenty years in the city center of Marseille. For the first time, the police headquarters partially bans the demonstration.

In previous years, police officers had been injured following the demonstration and street furniture had been damaged. The police chief also prohibits the carrying of weapons and the use of pyrotechnic articles from Saturday noon, as well as the sale of alcohol around Place Jean-Jaurès all day Sunday. The right-wing opposition in the municipal council called for a ban on the carnival on Thursday.
