On February 7, a boat capsized and was swept away by the current off the southern coast of Togado Island in Trinidad and Tobago. Along the way, it released a significant amount of oil into the ocean.

More than a week after the incident, authorities have not been able to discover the origin, owners or route of the damaged vessel. The Government has said it awaits further evidence to determine the exact nature of the ship's contents. So far not much is known about the environmental impact, although nearby communities have reported a persistent foul odor.
