The Hawaii Volcano Observatory detected a flash early on June 7, 2023 that confirmed that Kilauea volcano was erupting again. The volcano's alert level was raised to warning status and the aviation color code changed to red as scientists assess the eruption and associated hazards.

All activity is located within a closed area of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the Big Island of Hawaii, and does not affect population centers in principle. In 2018, a major eruption destroyed more than 700 homes.
