Ursula von der Leyen could declare herself a candidate for reappointment for five more years at the head of the European Commission. The German, the big favorite for her own succession, should announce this Monday that she is seeking a new mandate.

Without a credible competitor, dubbed by her own political family which, this time again, is given a comfortable lead in the European election next June, the German is moving forward. However, the candidacy of Angela Merkel's former minister suffers from a handicap. Is she not weakened while in the four corners of the Old Continent, climate standards from Brussels are being called into question?
