A State Department spokesman said the U.S. opposes the law and believes the organizations are critical to democracy.

According to the bill, an NGO that receives a donation from a foreign government will not be recognized as a public institution and will be taxed at 65% on its income. The private member's bill to restrict foreign government donations to NGOs will be put to a vote in the Ministerial Committee on Legislation on Sunday. The purpose of the bill is to "reduce the involvement of foreign political entities in Israeli democracy," according to the explanatory notes.
