Is the war in Ukraine an opportunity for Africa to assert its independence? Or does it underline how it is the eternal hostage of a geostrategic battle? The votes of African countries at the United Nations after the Russian invasion have been much commented. Half of the continent's 55 states abstained from condemning Moscow or did not take part in the vote.

In one year, Mali has even gone from abstention to support for Vladimir Putin. This attitude only reflects the growing rejection of Westerners in the Sahel.
