Is the war in Ukraine an opportunity for Africa to assert its independence? Actors or observers, some want to believe it. Or does it underline, conversely, how it is the eternal hostage of a geostrategic battle?
The votes of African countries at the United Nations after the Russian invasion have been much commented. Last February, as in March 2022, half of the continent's 55 states abstained from condemning Moscow or did not take part in the vote. Some positions were expected. In one year, Mali has even gone from abstention to support for Vladimir Putin. This attitude only reflects the growing rejection of Westerners and particularly of France in the Sahel, where the Wagner militia is well established. Senegal's abstention was more surprising. This ignored the fact that anti-French sentiment - with multiple causes - is gradually spreading to all the populations of French-speaking Africa.
