Kelvin Kiptum, who set the record in the Chicago Marathon in October and won the title of World Athlete of the Year, died in an accident in Kenya. His wife Joan Chelimo confirmed his death.
Kiptom was driving a Toyota Premio with his coach Gervais from Mizmana, with another female passenger in the car. The female passenger emerged from the collision with serious injuries, while the two passengers in front were killed. It is not clear what happened, but there was no other vehicle involved in the accident.
