A 59-year-old woman was killed by gunfire at her home in Surgères (Charente-Maritime) on Tuesday February 27. Her husband, who was at the scene at the time of the death, was taken into police custody.

The weapon responsible for the victim's death was an MP15 assault rifle. No marital conflict has emerged from the investigation so far, the public prosecutor indicates. On average, a feminicide occurs every three days in France. The Minister of Justice Éric Dupond-Moretti put forward at the beginning of January the figure of 94 femicides in 2023.
