A 59-year-old woman was killed by gunfire at her home in Surgères (Charente-Maritime) on Tuesday February 27, according to information from Sud-Ouest that Le Parisien is able to confirm.
Her husband was there.
This sports shooter, aged 76, is still in police custody this Wednesday.
According to France 3 and Sud Ouest, this man explained “handling his weapon” when the shot went off.
The weapon responsible for the victim's death was an MP15 assault rifle.
No marital conflict identified to date
No marital conflict has emerged from the investigation so far, the public prosecutor indicates to Le Parisien.
“The ongoing investigations aim to determine whether the origin of the shooting was accidental or deliberate,” he adds.
The investigation, entrusted to the Rochefort research brigade and the Surgères community of brigades, will have to determine the circumstances of the death.
On average, a feminicide occurs every three days in France.
The Minister of Justice Éric Dupond-Moretti put forward at the beginning of January the figure of 94 femicides in 2023, compared to 118 in 2022, a drop greeted with skepticism by feminist associations.
