A ram was shot dead by police in New Zealand on Thursday after allegedly killing an elderly couple on a farm. Alfred Helge Hansen and his wife Gaye Carole Hansen were found dead Thursday morning.

Their son, who went looking for them in the absence of news, discovered the bodies of his parents inanimate. Police said another unidentified person was slightly injured by the ram. Autopsies on the victims will be conducted this Friday, police said. Five million people and more than 25 million sheep live in New Zealand, where there are more than five million ram owners in the country. The ram was on the scene when police arrived, and was shot by a police officer after assessing the risks, a source told the New Zealand Herald. "Sadly, they both lost their lives in a tragic accident. They are good people, and they did not deserve this," adds Dean Burrell, a family spokesperson and nephew of the couple.
