It is a Mother's Day more felt than usual that takes place in this 2020 marked by the rules of social distancing: due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the just loosened lockdown, there will be many who will not be able to embrace their mother. Greetings will often be virtual and video call but always full of affection. Many others, however, the children who in recent weeks have had more time to spend at home with their mother.
When and where is Mother celebrated?
In Italy Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May . As well as in the United States, Australia, Japan. But not in all countries there is a universal date for this ... universal figure. In other countries, such as Spain and Portugal, mum is celebrated on the first Sunday of May.
And how did this holiday, so felt all over the world, come about?
There are ancient celebrations related to motherhood and the celebration of fertility which, however, do not seem to have any connection with today's feast. To retrace the origin of the current one, one must go to the second half of the nineteenth century. An attempt was made by Julia Ward Howe , a pacifist and abolitionist activist, proposing in the United States in 1870 the institution of Mother's Day for Peace, as a moment of reflection against the war. But the initiative was not followed.
Later, always in the United States, Anna Jarvis tried it and since 1908 she celebrated Mother's Day in honor of her mother, a pacifist activist. The President of the United States Woodrow Wilson made it official in 1914: from that moment Mother's Day was celebrated on the second Sunday of May, as a public expression of love and gratitude for mothers.
The party was introduced in 1917 in Switzerland, in 1918 in Finland, in 1919 in Norway and Sweden, in 1923 in Germany and in 1924 in Austria. Subsequently many other countries introduced the celebration.

Over the years, this party has taken a commercial route, with many advertisements, gifts and gadgets that try to seduce the consumer. A turnover comparable to Valentine's Day.
On the occasion of Mother's Day the children at school try their hand at the most varied and imaginative jobs or learn a poem to be recited to mothers. This year Mother's Day was also particular for this reason, with teachers and children engaged in distance learning, trying not to miss a little surprise for mothers.
