ROME - "Dear Joe, I know I was wrong! I acted the way I did and I said those things because I was hurt - not because I was convinced - and it was stupid to feel hurt because there really wasn't enough reason to to be, ultimately there was no reason. Please accept my apologies and don't, don't, don't get mad at your little girl, she loves you. Love, your wife (forever) Mrs. JP DiMaggio. "
It is the text of a note of apology from Marilyn Monroe to her then husband Joe DiMaggio, dated 1954, handwritten by the diva on the back of a laundry receipt.
The message will be auctioned at Christie's in New York on December 16;
the estimate ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 dollars.
The letter was discovered in the wallet of the former baseball champion, torn by time into four equal parts, but has never been restored precisely to restore the meaning of this little treasure jealously guarded by DiMaggio.
The document confirms the brief and tumultuous relationship between the two American icons, who would later separate in 1955.
The wallet remained exactly as it was found, with several membership cards, pieces of foreign currency inside and a photo of Joe himself.
It had to be a favorite of the champion, as it had been used to the point of wearing out and cracking at the sides.
On the front it bears the 'JD' monogram.
