(ANSA) - WARSAW, DEC 13 - Some thousands of people demonstrated today in Warsaw to protest against a sentence of the Constitutional Court which imposes an almost total ban on abortion in Poland, and also to demand the resignation of the conservative government.
The protesters, mostly women and young people, crossed the city to reach the home of Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, considered the strongman of the conservatives in power and the real responsible for the decision of the Court.
On several occasions, police have attempted to block the road from the march to prevent demonstrators from heading to Kaczynski's home, which has become a constant target of protests.
During the night, a group of farmers who accuse the government of having remained inactive in the face of falling prices for foodstuffs also deposited a dead pig in front of the house, and threw potatoes and eggs in the streets.
On October 22, the Constitutional Court, reformed by the ultra-Catholic Law and Justice party (PiS), in power, and complying with its wishes, banned the voluntary interruption of pregnancy in the event of a serious malformation of the fetus, establishing that it is "incompatible" Constitution.
Sentence results in a ban on all abortions except in cases of rape and incest or when the mother's life is in danger.
The protests are taking place despite the pandemic that has so far killed over 22,000 people in Poland.
