In era Covid food waste decreases in Italy but a lot is still thrown away: in 2020 there are 5.2 million tons of finished food in the garbage among what is thrown into the home and this concerns the entire supply chain for a value of about 9.7 billion euros of which only 6 billion and 403 million of domestic domestic food waste and over 3.2 billion euros, instead, of losses in the field and waste in trade and distribution.

These are the data contained in the report by Waste Watcher International Observatory on Food and Sustainability (on Ipsos survey), on the occasion of the 8 / a National Food Waste Prevention Day, on Friday 5 February disseminated by the Zero waste campaign, also responsible for the national day awareness campaign that organized an online marathon, next Friday, starting at 11.30 on a digital platform.

But in 2020, we read in the report, with the different lifestyles due to lockdowns due to Covid, awareness of the value of food has increased: in fact, the contraction of waste in Italy is highlighted with a decrease compared to 2019 , of almost 12% (3.6 kg) at home with a food waste of 'only' 27 kg (529 grams per week).

This means 222,125 tons of 'saved' food and a saving of 6 euros per capita, or 376 million euros nationwide, in a whole year.

"At home and in the kitchen, returning from the months of lockdown and distancing, Italians are launching a takeover bid on their future - explains the agroeconomist Andrea Segrè, founder of the Zero Waste campaign and of the National Food Waste Prevention Day - the tendency to a clear decrease in domestic food waste, which at national and global level plays the lion's share with an incidence of 60/70 per cent on the waste of the supply chain, is firmly confirmed in this first part of 2021 ".
