Green light from the Council of Ministers to the decree that establishes that the final landing of the Large Ships in Venice must be designed and built outside the lagoon.

The Minister of Cultural Heritage, Dario Franceschini, gave the news on Twitter.

"A fair decision that has been awaited for years", the minister emphasizes.

There is the Draghi Government stamp now to decree the decision to expel cruise ships from the Venice lagoon. Enough of the risks for the crystal city associated with the passage of the 'giants of the sea' in front of San Marco, as happened on 2 June 2019, when the MCS Opera crashed into the San Basilio quay. A decree law for the regulation of cruise traffic in the lagoon has arrived at the examination of the Council of Ministers today - approval is expected in the evening -. The draft of the dl provides for a competition of ideas to create mooring points for ships outside the protected waters of the Venice lagoon. Within 60 days from the entry into force of the provision, the Port System Authority of the Northern Adriatic Sea will have to launch a competition of ideas divided into two phases: "for the elaboration of ideas and technical and economic feasibility projects" to create and manage mooring points outside the protected waters of the lagoon. For 2021, 2.2 million euros are allocated.
