Alarm at the Capitol.

Yet again.

In front of the seat of the US Congress, an attacker killed a police officer and seriously injured another.

He drove a car into the officers before ramming into a barrier.

The attacker is also dead. When he attacked other police officers with a knife, he was shot.

Yogananda Pittman, Chief of the Capitol:

“It was an extremely difficult time for the Capitol, after the January 6th incidents and now with the incidents that happened here today.

So I ask you all to include the Capitol Police in your thoughts and prayers. "

It's been almost three months since an angry crowd stormed the Capitol and even invaded the building.

The mob wanted to prevent Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election from being ratified - and with it the defeat of Donald Trump.

At least five people died in the riot.

Security around the Capitol has been extremely high since then, although they have been scaled back slightly over the past week.

An outer fence that shielded the area around the congress headquarters was dismantled.

Streets that were within this circle and that were cordoned off were reopened.

The National Guard, however, was still there and now secured the area.

The Capitol was completely cordoned off at times.

The background to the fact is still unclear, but initial findings are available.

It doesn't look like there is a terrorist background.

But of course we're going to continue investigating and see if there are any links in that direction.

Robert Contee, Washington, DC Police Chief:

“It doesn't look like there's a terrorist background.

But of course we will continue the investigation and see if there are any connections in that direction. "

The police chief further stated that the man was not known to the police.

Recent posts by the perpetrator on social media indicated psychological and physical problems.

President Joe Biden said he and his wife were heartbroken.

The flags of the capital were hung at half-mast after the attack.

Numerous police vehicles accompanied the transport of the killed police officer.

William Evans, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.

He had been in the service of the Capitol Police for 18 years, as their managing director explained.
